James L. Spinks
Prior to becoming an attorney, James Spinks was a claims professional in the insurance industry working for a national property and casualty insurance company. In this position, James had the responsibility of managing and assisting in the coordination of defense strategy of ongoing litigation involving its policyholders. This experience inspired James to pursue his J.D., and he did so at night and on weekends at Birmingham School of Law. James finished in the top 10% of his class and was a member of the Judge Hugh Locke Honor Society. Upon completion of law school, James immediately began working with Smith Spires Peddy Hamilton & Coleman. Since that time, James has developed his litigation practice which is primarily in the areas of automobile/trucking litigation, insurance coverage disputes, construction defect claims, construction accident claims, product liability, engineer/architect defense, premises liability and other contract/commercial litigation.
In addition to being in the courtroom, James’ practice also includes providing insurance companies with insurance coverage opinions and assisting business/construction clients with drafting of necessary contracts to protect their interests. James also assists individual clients with estate planning matters in the drafting of wills, trusts, or other legal instruments in order to protect and preserve assets.
Throughout his career, James has been lead counsel in multiple trials from retention to jury verdict including appeals. James is a member of the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association and is licensed to practice in all Alabama Courts, as well as the U.S. District Courts for North, Middle, and Southern Districts and the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. James is also a member of the Birmingham and Alabama Bar Associations
James has a passion for defending and representing individuals and businesses, small and large, when faced with the uncertainty of litigation or in other times of need. In any representation, James seeks to achieve the desired result and outcome for the client. This requires effective communication and collaboration from start to finish.
James is married to Molly Hilyer Spinks and has two boys, Sheffield and Bowen. When James is not at work, he enjoys spending time with his family, being outdoors, and watching/playing sports.
